[INTERNAL] Workshop on Speculative Design at the University of Split 6 July 2022

The University of Split invites you to participate in a workshop about the Future of remote research. During the three days in Split, we will be exploring a series of possible, preferable, and less preferable future scenarios of remote research, as well as the implications of these scenarios, presented using various communications methods, tools, and approaches (adapted to the group needs). The workshop will be led by renowned and experienced international experts in speculative and critical design, applied in the research context, dr. Michael Smyth and dr. Ingi Helgason from the Edinburgh Napier University.

The workshop will take place from July 4 to 6, and there are still a few spots available for those who are interested. Contact marko.vuckovic@unist.hr for more information on the workshop and travel arrangements.

WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO?

The workshop approach will be multidisciplinary, using Critical and Speculative Design as a cohesive vehicle connecting different research fields and backgrounds with the design perspective. The outcome of the workshop will be a series of possible, preferable and less preferable future scenarios of remote research dealing also with the implications of these scenarios, presented using different communications methods, tools and approaches (adapted to the group needs).

IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR ME?

We expect participants who are keen to create things and stories. Participants who like to design concepts, products and services. Thinkers who are looking into human–technology relationships. Visionaries who would be happy to look into the future of research. Critical thinkers who are interested in how we are going to live in the future. The workshop will be open for all, based on the multidisciplinarity, collaboration, participation and inclusion and there are no requested skills or backgrounds.

WHAT WE ARE GOING TO “PRODUCE”?

In these intensive 3 days workshop we are hoping to produce various lo-fi prototypes, helping us to articulate and communicate our ideas about possible futures of remote research.

WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO BRING HOME FROM THIS WORKSHOP?

We hope that participants will gain a more critical attitude regarding their research and the future implications of our agency, moving on from the simple applications of the research and technology.
