This workshop is being offered as an optional module for PhD students and RSOs who have completed part one of the course entitled ‘Introduction to Open Science: Principles of Transparency and Collaboration in Doctoral Research (DOC6060).

This workshop / lecture aims to teach students about open science, covering topics like open data, data repositories, software licenses, and collaborative platforms.

Objectives

The lecture aims to achieve the following objectives:

• Introduction to Open Science, Data Organisation and Data Sharing
• Learn about open source and closed source software, different types of software licenses, and platforms where developers collaborate on open-source projects.
• Explore different types of data repositories and provide guidance on selecting the appropriate repository for specific needs.
• Demonstrate how to deposit data on these repositories, specifically focusing on drUM, the University of Malta’s data repository.
• Learn about Data Management, FAIR Principles and the tools available to create Data Management Plans.

Expected Outcomes

1. Conceptual Understanding:
   a. Participants would be able to define open science and open data.
   b. Participants would gain knowledge about open source and closed source software, various software licenses, and platforms for
   open-source collaboration.
   
2. Repository Knowledge:
   a. Participants would be able to identify different types of data repositories and make informed decisions about repository selection.
   b. Participants would acquire practical skills in developing a data management plan (DMP) and depositing data on drUM.
   
3. Data Sharing Proficiency:
   a. Participants would be aware of the benefits and challenges associated with sharing data.
   b. Participants would be able to apply the FAIR principles to enhance their data management practices.

Conclusion

Our aim is that participants leave the lecture equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, fostering a culture of open collaboration and effective data management within the academic community.
